2000 Cadillac DeVille PICTURES

The DeVille (also De Ville and de Ville) name has been used on many of Cadillac's luxury car models. After the Fleetwood was dropped from the Cadillac line-up the DeVille became the Cadillac flagship sedan until it was replaced by the DTS for the 2006 model year.

History

The first Cadillac to bear the name was the 1949 Coupe De Ville, with a 4-door hardtop version appearing in 1956. Beginning in 1965, DeVille denoted Cadillac's mainstream model, falling between the Calais and the Fleetwood. For 1968, the DeVille gained slight exterior changes to comply with new federal safety and emissions legislation, and as with the rest of the Cadillac lineup, a new 472 in³ (7.7 L) V8 engine rated at 375 hp (sae gross).

The Cadillac Allanté was Cadillac's first venture into the ultra-luxury roadster market and was sold from 1987 through 1993.

Development and production

Originally designed under the code name "Callisto", the Allanté was intended to restore Cadillac to its position as a credible competitor to the Mercedes-Benz 560SL. Its chassis and engine were originally taken from the Cadillac Eldorado, though it also shared components with the Buick Reatta, Riviera and the Oldsmobile Toronado.

The chassis of the Allanté was made in Detroit, then was loaded onto specially equipped jets and shipped to Italy where the body (which was designed by Pininfarina of Ferrari fame) was mounted to the chassis. Afterwards, the cars were loaded back on the jetliners and shipped back to the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan for completion. This led to a few interesting nicknames, such as "The Flying Italian Cadillac" and "the world's longest assembly line."

I captured this image on 35mm film at a Calgary Intl Auto & Truck Show, Stampede Roundup Centre 1987? I'm curious to know why GM never went through with this concept then. They also used this or a similar concept car in the movie Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock!

1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, pale yellow, matching interior, tan top, big V8 and all the Cadillac luxury items including automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, climate control air conditioning, rear defogger, AM/FM stereo, white wall radial tires and more. This is a lot of car for the money. Set on a 126-inch wheelbase, 224-inches long, the car weighs in at 5167 pounds with a 500 cubic inch V8 engine. Advertised in 1976 as the "last of the convertibles ever to be built" (they lied to us), they nearly doubled the previous year's production with 10,374 units built. Now in our showroom.

The Eldorado model was part of the Cadillac line from 1953 to 2002. The Cadillac Eldorado was the longest running American personal luxury car as it was the only one sold after the 1998 model year. Its main competitors included the Mark Series and the lower-priced Buick Riviera. The name Eldorado was derived from the Spanish words "el dorado", the "gilded one"; the name was given originally to the legendary chief or "cacique" of a S. American Indian tribe. Legend has it that his followers would sprinkle his body with gold dust on ceremonial occasions and he would wash it off again by diving into a lake. The name more frequently refers to a legendary city of fabulous riches, somewhere in S. America, that inspired many European expeditions, including one to the Orinoco by England's Sir Walter Raleigh.

A more distinguished-looking Cadillac Biarritz arrived for 1963. The lower body "skeg" lines of 1961-1962 were erased on all Cadillacs, and wide brushed-finish rocker panel moldings gave the Biarritz closer kinship with the svelte Sixty Special. The price remained stable -- a nominal two dollars less than the year before -- and production, though still limited, increased significantly.

The off-again/on-again rear fender skirts were gone again for 1964. Otherwise, this year's Fleetwood Eldorado convertible looked very much like the 1963 Biarritz.

GM's auto designer Harley Earl went to the 1954 Motorama with the El Camino coupe, La Espada roadster, and four-door Park Avenue. The last not only very accurately predicted the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, but the rest of the 1957 Cadillac line, and, to a lesser degree, the 1957 Buick and Oldsmobile.

Though the Park Avenue wasn't a true four-door hardtop, the attractive stainless window frame treatment made it look deceptively like one. The top was brushed aluminum. Again, Earl noted the reaction from those who could really afford such cars, and the overwhelming choice was the Park Avenue sedan.
